Welcome

Welcome to Airhouses

This welcome book is intended to help you get acquainted with the area. We've downloaded our years of area knowledge for you to enjoy! Favourite restaurants, fun activities, and more. However, this is just a taste of what our area has to offer.

Our Philosophy

You want to have a wonderful vacation and we want that for you too.

Enjoy your stay!

On the Farm

Animals on the Farm

Alpacas

We have two boy Alpacas who are called Obama and Orlando.  Their coats are shorn every year, usually by a shearer from Australia, and the wool is spun locally into cones for machine knitting or balls for hand knitting.  The yarn is lovely and soft.

Hens

There are numerous hens and bantams.  Some breeds are local to Scotland and some from further afield.  The bantams are mainly Pekin bantams. They are all totally free range although we do have to shut them in when it goes dark, otherwise the fox will have them for his supper!  Where possible we use the eggs in your breakfast basket.

Llamas

Toffee is our lovely Llama.  She used to belong to a small Farm visitor centre so is quite used to people.  She likes polo mints, apples and carrots.

We take her coat off every couple of years.  It does not grow as fast as the alpacas.  It spins in a very soft yarn.

Pigs

We have 3 pigs in total.  All pets, and all love to be fed.  We try to avoid meat of any sort but they love apples and carrots.

Snuffle and Truffle are together in the Wood and Sophie, who is rather large and exceedingly greedy, is by the farm buildings.

Shetland Ponies

We have 8 Shetland Ponies.  There is Ruby with her two daughters, both born at Airhouses, and they are called Rosie and Biscuit.  Both can be taken out on a lead rein.

We then have the "gang of four".  Marmalade, Waffle, Sophie and Mary.  These 4 ladies were all rescued from appalling conditions but are now very happy.

Then there is little Ben who keeps Toffee, our lovely Llama, company.

Cows

The cows are the mainstay of the farm.  We have around 80 head of Aberdeen Angus cows with their followers.   We have a few Belted Galloways as well and you may be able to spot them.  They have white across their middles.

Calving takes place April/May and cows with their calves are kept well away from footpaths etc and a newly calved cow can be very possessive of her off spring.

Around the Farm

Out and About on the Farm

Treasure Trail

Treasure Trail - There is a circular treasure trail which starts from the Totem Pole with the Owl.  The final clue is around the base of the Pole.  The route takes you down the back road from Airhouse and into the village of Oxton then back along the road you came in on.  It is 3.5 miles in total.

Children's Puzzle Trail

Children's Puzzle Trail - Same route as the Treasure Trail but easier! There is a Word Search as well to add interest!  It is not just children who enjoy doing this version of the trail.

Again, the start and finish of the trail is at the Totem Pole near the bantams.

Enchanted Wood

Enchanted Wood - head north through the farm yard and just before the cottages, turn left and then take the fork to the right. There is a small wood at the end of this short track. The ground is covered with Wild Sorrell for much of the year and there are a number of secret fairy doors hidden away in the wood.

Jogging Trail

Jogging - there is a 3.5 mile circular route through the village of Oxton and various pathways off this which can be used as a jogging circuit.

Walks on the Farm

Windmill View - north through the farm yard and just before the cottages, turn left and follow the signs for Footpath avoiding farm yard. This path goes from north to south and is about one mile of fenced track with great views not only of the Windmills but the surrounding countryside.

This path can also be accessed from the south end. Go back along the road you drove in on to the first cattle grid and just across the cattle grid is a gate to the right which is the start of the path. If you want to avoid the cattle grid there is a path just before to the right. If you go through this gate you will see the footpath both to your left and right. Left will take you to the road you drove in on.

The Meadow - Take the road out of the farm towards the cottages and follow the road round the bend. Just below the single cottage on the left there is a gate on the right taking you into The Meadow. This is a delightful field with a burn at the bottom of it.  It is ideal for ball games, rounders, picnics.

The Well Field - Further down the road to the Meadow again on the right there is the Well Field. There is a self closing gate which leads to a walk alongside an old Beech Hedge  towards the bottom of the field. Take a right and head toward the Dragon Fly pond.

Girthgate - There is a fenced Core Path along the southern bournday of our land. If you take the road you came in on up to the council road/large purple sign and turn right instead of left to Oxton. In a few hundred yardsyou will see the signpost for the core path.  The first part is fenced then you are on open farmland. The path takes you to Lauder Common, then onto Blainslie. You can walk on to Melrose but it is around 20 miles. It is also popular for running.

Wildlife

there is an abundance of wildlife at Airhouses.  Lots of deer, hares, badgers, stoats, butterflies and birds including a number of high concern species, wild flowers. barn owls and more.

The RSPB carried out a survey of birds at Airhouse Farm recently.  They recorded 48 species during the survey, 21 of which are "Birds of Conservation Concern".  Some from the list are:

Herring Gull, House Sparrow, Lesser Redpoll, Linnet, Song Thrush, Spotted Flycatcher, Starling, Tree Sparrow, Yellow Hammer, Black Headed Gull, Dunnock, House Martin, Lesser Black Backed Gull, Mallard, Meadow Pipit, Mistle Thrush, Oystercatcher, Redstart, Swallow, Swift, Willow Warbler.

PlayDen

PlayDen - Ideal for the under 7's.  This is an old Summer House by the farm buildings and it is full of toys, games, books, puzzles etc. You, or your children, are welcome to play in or borrow items to take back to your lodge.

St. Cuthberts Way

St. Cuthbert's Way runs through the Scottish Borders into Northumberland.  St Cuthbert (635 - 87) is thought to have been brought up in Lauderdale, and he became a shepherd near to Airhouses in Oxton. At the age of seventeen Cuthbert reputedly saw one night in a vision a great light in the sky, with a Christian soul being escorted to heaven by angels. He discovered the next day that St Aidan, the founder of the Lindisfarne and Melrose communities had died. He resolved at this stage to join the monastery at Melrose and then shortly became its third Prior.
From Melrose he followed the monastery's founder St Aidan to Lindisfarne and was the Prior of Lindisfarne, then the Bishop of Hexham before returning as Bishop of Lindisfarne.

More information and history of St. Cuthbert's Way can be found here.

John Buchan Way

John Buchan Way is named after the author John Buchan who wrote many novels.  His best known one being The Thirty Nine Steps.  This walk is 13 miles from Peebles to Broughton.  Follow the link here to download more information and a map of the walk.

Ancestry and Genealogy

Tracing your Roots

Would you like to learn about the background of your family or your earlier ancestors?

In the Scottish Borders we have the enormous advantage of the Heritage Hub which holds the archived manuscript records for the whole of the Scottish Borders and beyond.  It gives access to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk where all of Scotland's key family history records are accessible and where, most importantly, you will find people to help you.

Have you links with a farm, or a village, or perhaps a name such as Scott, Elliot, Turnbull, Pringle, Armstrong, Home, Kerr, Rutherford or Douglas?

Did you know that there are over 50 million people worldwide with Scottish Ancestry.

Did you know that the statue outside the Tower Mill at Hawick is The Turnbull - turn-bull.

There are lots of places connected with names from the Borders, in the Borders, which you can visit such as Bowhill, Abbotsford, Smailholm Tower all relating to the name Scott.  Ferniehurst Castle, Floors Castle and Jedburgh Abbey, relating to Kerr are just a few examples.  There are more examples as well as lots more information to help you start your search in the Scottish Borders in the leaflet prepared by the Scottish Ancestral Tourism Group which can be found here.

There is lots of information on the Visit Scotland website which can be accessed here.

Guide to Cultural Attractions

Abbeys

Dryburgh Abbey

Drybrugh Abbey

Dryburgh Abbey has the reputation for being the most beautiful of all the Border Abbeys and the ruins are remarkable complete and surrounded by stunning grounds.  It was first established in 1150 and became the premier house in Scotland of the Premonstratensian order and still continues with a peaceful atmosphere.

The graceful ruins became the burial place of David Eskrine, the 11th Earl of Buchan in 1829, and three years later his friend Sir Walter Scott was buried at Dryburgh Abbey too.  Despite having been set on fire three times, the Chapter House features paintwork that dates back to 1150 and has some of the best Gothic architecture in Scotland.

Jedburgh Abbey

Jedburgh Abbey

This abbey was founded by David 1 in around 1138 for Augustinian canons.  The church was built in the Romanesque and early Gothic styles and is remarkably complete.  Being close to the English Border, Jedburgh Abbey was frequently targeted by invading armies.  Remains of the cloister buildings have been uncovered and finds from the excavations, incuding the 12th Century "Jedburgh Comb" and an 8th century shrine are on display.

Close by is the Mary Queen of Scots Visitor Centre and the Jedburgh Castle Jail and Museum.

Kelso Abbey

Kelso Abbey

Kelso Abbey dates back to the 12th Century, being built in 1128 and the years following, and is one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture.  The wealth of the abbey came from its vast lands, its churches, schools, and farms in the Cheviot Hills.  Kelso is a lovely town to visit with shops, restaurants, cafes, garden centres, and lots of walks along the river.  Also there is the beautiful Floors Castle with it's own Garden Centre and Cafes.

Melrose Abbey

Melrose Abbey

This abbey is a magnificent ruin with lavishly decorated masonry.  The abbey was founded by David 1 in 1136 for the Cistercian Order but was largely destroyed by Richard 11's army in 1385.  The exterior is decorated by unusual sculptures, including hobgoblins, cooks with ladles and a bagpipe playing pig!  The town of Melrose itself is well worth a visit with lots of places to eat, interesting shops, etc.

Rosslyn Chapel

Rosslyn Chapel - Founded in 1446 as the collegiate Chapel of St Matthew by Sir William St Clair, the Chapel took forty years to complete and was not finished until the after Sir William's death in 1484. The beauty of its setting and the mysterious symbolism of its ornate stonework have inspired and intrigued artists and visitors ever since.

Today there are countless theories, myths and legends associated with the Chapel; many of which are impossible to prove or disprove conclusively (Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code being a recent example). Why not come and visit Rosslyn and see the place for yourself. Our tour guides will be able to tell you more about the Chapel stories as well as its equally interesting factual history. We also have a new state-of-the-art visitor centre with interactive displays and further information on offer, as well as a cafe and gift shop to make sure you get the most out of your visit.

Bamburgh Castle

Bamburgh Castle

Once the royal seat of the Kings of Northumbria, Bamburgh Castle has stood guard over this beautiful coastline for over 1,400 years. Spanning nine acres of land on its rocky plateau, Bamburgh Castle is one of the largest inhabited castles in the country.

EXPLORE Bamburgh Castle and discover everything this iconic building has to offer. The castle enjoys more than its fair share of legends and myths. With dragons and ghosts it’s also believed to be the site of Sir Lancelot's fictitious castle, Joyous Garde.

MYSTERY awaits as the past comes to life with dark tales of royal rebellion, bloody battles and spell-binding legends. The adventure starts here – what will you uncover?

DISCOVER the legacy of the Armstrong empire as you take a trip back through time. With 14 rooms and over 3,000 items on display, ranging from arms and armour to fine porcelain, china, artworks and furniture, there is plenty to discover.

DEFENDING itself from its position 150 feet above the sea, Bamburgh Castle dominates the Northumberland countryside and coastline. It sits on a natural throne of volcanic dolerite, known locally as whinstone for the sound it makes when hit by a stonemason’s hammer.

NATURAL BEAUTY like this is a rare treat. The magnificent castle stands proudly on the coast with breath-taking views out to The Farne Islands and Lindisfarne. It’s little surprise it has been designated an area of outstanding natural beauty.
