Guide to Activities

Million Dollar Beach

Million Dollar Beach is the largest and most well-known beach in Lake George, offering lifeguards, showers, picnic areas and plenty of room to swim.

Down the road past the Steamboats on the way to the east side, you'll find the most popular beach, Million Dollar Beach. This beach is state run, very clean and family friendly with trained lifeguards on duty. Admission to the beach is "free" but the parking is $10 car and $4 per motorcycle. Million Dollar Beach has the best changing rooms and most "sand" of all the Lake George beaches. Teenagers will prefer Million Dollar Beach, which is packed with people and has a sandy volleyball court and a very nice locker area. The beach features a full-time, public boat launch - the only free launch in Lake George's Southern basin. Open 7 days a week through September 1 from 10:00 am to 6:30 pm. Picnic Area hours are 10:00 am to dusk.

Directions & Map  (55 mins. away)

Shepard's Park Beach, Park, Amphitheater & Public Restrooms

In the heart of the village, behind the fountain and the outdoor stage, you will find the most popular "free" beach... Shepard's Park Beach with public restrooms and playground.

Located on Canada Street in Lake George, Shepard's Park has restrooms and is centrally located near all the village restaurants and shopping, a great little playground and outdoor stage where you'll find free live music and entertainment.

Usher's Park: Beach, Park, Playground, Picnic Area, Tennis & Public Restrooms

Just past Million Dollar Beach on Route 9L is the little known Usher's Park Beach. This very safe, free beach is quieter & ideal for parents with small children who are concerned with safety. Has picnic area, tennis courts, playground & restroom.

Beach Hours: 9:30 am - 6:00 pm*

Usher's Park Beach is located down a steep hill (you can ask the state workers with the golf carts to take you up and down if you are loaded with too much beach stuff). It's small enough that you can know where your kids are at all times. There is one lifeguard on duty and the area where you swim is extremely shallow. On the top of the hill there is a fantastic playground for children of all ages and a very large picnic area for large families and a basketball court. To get there: Take Beach Road east past the Steamboats and the Million Dollar Beach until you come to the end (Route 9L), take a left on Route 9L. Drive a few hundred yards and you will see a parking lot, basketball courts and a playground on your right. Park at the Parking lot and follow the path down the hill to the beach.

*Lifeguards begin clean-up around 5:30 pm and ask that visitors pack up for the day by 5:45 pm.

Bike enthusiasts will also love the scenic rural roads from Ticonderoga through the quaint towns of Hague and Brant Lake.

Check out these mapped routes for Ticonderoga Cycling Trails! There are endless opportunities to explore the region via highway, byways and trails.

Ticonderoga offers some wonderful hiking options for outdoor enthusiasts…here are just a few:

  • Treadway Mountain is a moderate climb with views of the Adirondack High Peaks and located by gorgeous Putnam Pond Campground, a popular and remote campground in Ticonderoga NY.
  • Mount Defiance, an 853 foot hill is located in “Ti,” and not only has a breathtaking view of Lake Champlain and Fort Ticonderoga, but it bears an amazing history. During the Revolutionary War, in the Battle of Ticonderoga, the British army succeeded in stationing canons on top Mount Defiance, which overlooked Fort Ticonderoga and Fort Independence, forcing the Americans to abandon the forts. The current walking road is the road British General Burgoyne’s army constructed in 1777.
  • Cook Mountain is a 200 acre-preserve providing great views of Lake George, the Champlain Valley, and Vermont’s Green Mountains. The trail is a little over a mile to the summit and is a short, steep climb. Besides hiking trails, this 200-acre conservancy has two beaver ponds, historic grave sites, and much wildlife. A moderately difficult ascent taking about 45 minutes, accessed from Baldwin Road.
  • Belfry Mountain is the easiest Fire Tower Challenge hike at just 0.3 miles. It’s located in the  town of Moriah, NY just above an abandoned mining area.  Views from the summit include Lake Champlain, Green Mountains, Hurricane and Whiteface Mountain and Rocky and Giant to the southwest as well as the Great Range.

For more intense hiking experiences, the Adirondack High Peaks are just a short drive away. Ticonderoga NY is the perfect destination for those looking to experience the breathtaking Adirondack Mountains or the pristine lakes of upstate NY!

The bald-rock summit of Buck Mountain offers, above all, a sense of serenity and peace. The cool breeze, the endless expanse of green, and the spectacular scenery all unite to give you a unique Adirondack experience.

Buck is a moderate hike of three miles (one way), with a few challenging spots. Be sure to follow the yellow markers! Be especially careful not to take a right-hand turn early in the hike. Check out both Cat Mountain andTongue Mountain for a more challenging hike if you prefer.

Head south on Routes 9/9N. Turn left at Route 9L. Follow this road, and drive slowly, for you don’t want to miss the magnificent beauty of the too-often-overlooked east side of Lake George. Relax until you pass Cleverdale Road on your left. Immediately after that, take a sharp left on Pilot Knob Road, and follow it to a well-marked parking lot to the trailhead. Buck is also accessible by boat from Pilot knob.

Prospect Mountain is one of the most popular hikes in the Lake George Region, and is a 3-mile round-trip hike

Because its steep grade makes it quite difficult in spots, this hike is not recommended for young children. Upon reaching the summit 2,030 feet above sea level, hikers will be rewarded with 100-mile views of Lake George and the Adirondacks, plus Vermont's Green Mountains and New Hampshire's White Mountains.

The Prospect Mountain Trail begins on Smith Street in Lake George Village. From Exit 22 of I-87, turn right onto Canada Street, then right onto Montcalm Street (across from Shepard Park). Continue on Montcalm, then turn right on Cooper Street and travel one block until you reach West Street. Turn left onto West Street, go up one block, and turn left onto Smith Street. On Smith Street, you'll see a sign indicating the beginning of the trail, along with the entrance to an elevated walkway.

Summer: Hike self-guided tour & explore LARGEST cave entrance in East, waterfalls, gorge, caves. Also guided adventure tours, gemstone mining, disc golf, climbing walls, dino dig, simulated mines, & extensive rock shop. Winter: snowshoe trails/tour.

Rail-biking with Revolution Rail Co. is a fun excursion activity that allows riders to ride the railroad tracks under their own power and explore a section of the Adirondacks that has never seen passenger traffic.

Once railbikers check in at the historic North Creek Railroad Station, they’ll take a short shuttle ride 5 miles north of town to the tour launch point. After a short safety briefing, the tour guides will lead the railbikers further north on a 6 mile round trip cruise.

The tour takes riders through the beautiful Adirondack forest canopy along the banks of the Hudson River, and then over the Hudson on a spectacular trestle bridge before turning for home and returning to the launch point and the shuttle bus ride back to the North Creek Railroad Station.

Recently, during attempted renovations to Morbid Mansion, workers discovered a secret passageway leading to the ruins of an old abandoned waxworks. Dr. Willy S. Morbid, the proprietor of Morbid Mansion, and known to locals as the Mad Waxmaker, is said to have used bizarre methods when filling his wax-works with statues. Are you brave enough to venture forth into his Macabre Mansion and see for yourself?

Dr. Morbid’s Haunted House is located in Lake George Village on Canada Street (Route 9). If you’re looking for more terrifying fun, visit the House of Frankenstein Wax Museum just down the street.

This fun-filled Lake George Attraction is THE thing to do in Lake George for nostalgia and great family memories.  The tradition of this Lake George attraction has been on the list of things to do in Lake George for over forty years.  Begin your family tradition this season while vacationing in Lake George.

Be warned the House of Frankenstein is not just another Wax Museum. No indeed. When you walk the steps of the haunted stairs you are on your own. Don’t turn back, there is no turning back, you must finish this journey of terror.  Other Lake George attractions are fun in the sun; we specialize in the dark and chilly things to do in Lake George.

The industrial history of Ticonderoga can't be told without describing paper mills, graphite mining and pencils. The Heritage Museum preserves and interprets that history.  Housed in the "1888 building," the museum is the last remaining structure of the Ticonderoga Pulp and Paper Company that once covered the area now known as Bicentennial Park.

A heritage visitors center along the Lakes to Locks passage, the museum hosts historically accurate exhibits and creative children's workshops. The museum's displays and exhibits interpret the manufacturing techniques and the history of the International Paper Company, the American Graphite Company (makers of the famous Dixon-Ticonderoga pencils), and other industries of the area.

More than 890 runners crossed the finish line in 2014 in all races combined — including just over 500 finishers in the half-marathon alone — for a race that begins at mile 13 of the full marathon and takes participants around the southern tip of Schroon Lake back up toward the town of Schroon for the finish.

Course Description:  The Adirondack Marathon starts on Main St. Schroon and heads north. The course is one full loop around Schroon Lake on paved roadways (except for one half-mile stretch of gravel road in mile 3).

The first four miles are rolling or flat. Miles 4-12 feature short, but steep hills along a two-lane country road on the east side of the lake.

Miles 13-18 are flat, along the east shore. Then, there are long, gentle hills on Route 9, leading north to the finish in the town of Schroon.

Water Safety Advice

Keeping Safe At The Lake

  • Even the best water enthusiasts can misjudge changing water conditions when boating or swimming in open water. Be prepared at all times by wearing a life jacket – you'll never know when you'll be tossed into the water.
  • Have children wear a life jacket that fits them, and watch them closely around water – they can go under water quickly and quietly
  • Everyone wears a life jacket – regardless of swimming ability, everyone MUST wear a life jacket on any boat
  • Swim in a life-guarded area, especially if you are not a strong swimmer
  • Stay sober when on or in the water. Alcohol and other drugs increase the effects of weather, temperature, and wave action
  • Never swim alone, always take a buddy
  • Learn CPR
  • No glass of any kind near the water
  • Children should be made aware of water “boundaries” in order to keep them safe. You can do this by:
    • Establishing a point in the backyard that children may not pass unless they are with an adult
    • Clearly pointing out the areas that are designated for swimming
    • Letting your children know how far into the water they may go
    • Pointing out areas where boats travel so that kids can avoid them

Ice Water Safety:

  • Always check the ice before you go out on it.  Use an ice auger, ice pick, spud bar or a cordless drill to make holes.  New, clear, bluish-black ice is stronger than ice that is white or bubble-filled.   The thickness guidelines listed below from several organizations are for new, clear ice.

  • Ice does not form uniformly.  If ice along the shore is cracked, stay off.  Lake  George has sub-surface currents that also make the thickness of the ice variable.

  • Avoid ice that is honeycombed or piled up.

  • Ice is thinner near running water.  Avoid shoreline areas near stream channels or ice eaters on docks.

  • Stay away from shoals and other underwater hazards as the ice above them is thinner.

  • Once on the ice, do not congregate in large groups, build a fire, or drive a large vehicle out on the ice.

  • When snowmobiling at night, don’t “out-drive” your headlight. Give yourself time to spot and avoid open water, pressure ridges and patches of weak ice.

  • Do not drink. Alcohol increases your chances for hypothermia, impairs your judgment and slows your reaction time.

If you decide to venture down to Lake George Village please note:

Parking and traffic can be a nightmare; especially during the Tourist season. All parking in the village is paid parking though you may be able to find some free parking on the back roads. There is a great deal of traffic during the daytime so be prepared to stop. Driving is probably the worst way to get around the village and you’ll burn more gas in traffic then actually driving. There is an alternative!

        The Trolley

        Glens Falls, NY 12801
        (518) 792-1085

They are the South RV A, South RV B, Glens Falls, North A and North B/C. Each trolley is clearly marked with a sign in the front and back windows. All trolleys originate in Lake George Village and travel down Beach rd to the steamboat docks. The base fare for all routes is $1 with children under 5 free and half price for those above the age of 60. There is a zone change fee but that only applies when traveling from a southbound trolley to the North B/C trolley or vice versa. All trolleys are easily spotted due to their bright red color but if you are unable to find one the docks are a good place to go because all routes begin there. The run times for trolleys differ per route but most run every 40 to 45 minutes.

                Boat Launch Locations

For guest traveling with their boats, we are providing locations to launch your boat as launching from the house is unavailable.  Please make sure your boat can fit in our boat dock before making any arrangements.

Northern Lake George Area Boat Launches

The following designations are used to indicate the agency that operates a particular boat launch site. Boaters should expect to pay a day use fee for launches within a DEC Campground during the camping season.

                • (D) - DEC
                • (P) - Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation
                • (C) - Canal Corporation

The following definitions will assist you in determining if a particular site will accommodate your boat:

                • Hard surface or concrete ramp--site affords float-off and float-on launching for most trailered boats.
                • Beach launch--no float-off or float-on trailered boat capability. Sites will accommodate the approach to the water's edge of small and light trailered boats. Boat may then be pushed on or off trailer. Usually shallow areas.
                • Hand launch--no trailer capacity. Boats must be hand carried to the water.

Note: Boaters and Anglers, please remember that you can help prevent the spread of unwanted aquatic plant and animal species by following these guidelines:

                • Remove all mud and aquatic plants from all gear, boats, motors and trailers before departing from your fishing location
                • Drain all water including bilges, live wells, and bait tanks before departing from your fishing location
                • Do not transport fish from one body of water to another
                • Do not release unused bait into a body of water
                • Do not dispose of fish carcasses or by-products in any body of water
                • Lake George - Mossy Point : (D) - Essex County, Mossy Point. On Black Point Road, two miles south of the Village of Ticonderoga on east shore of Lake George. Accessible, hard surface launching ramp. Parking for 100 cars and trailers. Pump out. (11 minutes from the house)
                • Lake George - Rogers Rock : (D) - Warren County, Campground. On Route 9N, 3 miles north of the Hamlet of Hague. Concrete ramp. Parking for 24 cars and trailers.
                • Lake George - NW Bay Brook : (D) - Warren County, Northwest Bay Brook. On Route 9N, 4 miles north of the Village of Bolton Landing. Hand launching. Parking for 15 cars.
